Travelling Outside Of Canada? Here's 7 Things You Need To Know

7 Things You Need To Know If You're Taking A Vacation Abroad ...

Managing Editor, Canada

Although the federal government continues to advise against all non-essential travel outside of Canada, an increasing number of Canadians are planning to head overseas this summer.

While the decision to take an international trip is ultimately up to the individual, there are a number of things all travellers should consider before packing their bags.

Here are seven things to keep in mind before you get going:

Check your COVID-19 vaccines

It's important to be aware that while you may be considered fully vaccinated in Canada, you may not elsewhere.

This is because some countries and cruise ships have not approved the same COVID-19 vaccine courses as Canada.

For example, the COVISHIELD vaccine is not recognized in some countries, while a number of cruise ships will not accept passengers who received mix and match doses.

Before booking a trip, make sure to check that specific country or cruise ship's vaccine policy.

Double-check all border crossing requirements

Every country has different policies for travel right now, so it's essential to find out what is and isn't allowed at each individual destination.

While some places are welcoming back all air travellers, others continue to offer restriction-free travel to fully vaccinated visitors only.

Quarantine rules, arrival testing and general COVID-19 measures vary in every region, so find out what's up before booking a flight.

Be prepared to take COVID-19 tests

Although travel restrictions are beginning to loosen in many countries, including Canada, most still require travellers to take at least one COVID-19 test.

Depending on the destination, air passengers can be required to take multiple tests during their trip, including pre-arrival and post-arrival. Travellers returning home to Canada must take at least one test upon their return.

Anybody taking a trip overseas should be prepared to have tests taken on several occasions.

Check for COVID-19 symptoms

Those hoping to take a vacation away from home should brush up on their knowledge of COVID-19 symptoms.

This way, travellers can be aware of what to look out for if they become sick and can tell a doctor ASAP.

Most public spaces, including restaurants, shops and cinemas, will ask customers to stay away if they're feeling unwell.

Prepare for the unexpected

One of the reasons the Government of Canada continues to advise against all non-essential travel is because officials say border measures are subject to change at any time.

This means that Canada, or the destination country, could update their restrictions with little to no warning, which could leave travellers stuck outside of their home country.

Those taking international trips should consider their backup plan if rules were to change at short notice.

Choose travel insurance carefully

For those flying, the feds advise getting travel insurance to cover things like trip interruption, lost luggage and document replacement, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Experts urge travellers to "read the small print" when looking for insurance during the pandemic, as Canada's ongoing travel advisory means there are likely to be exemptions in coverage, particularly related to interruptions and cancellations.

Don't forget your mask

This is an important one, as many airlines and airports continue to require all passengers to wear a mask (including in Canada).

Face coverings are also mandatory on many types of public transport too and some countries continue to require them in both indoor and outdoor spaces.
