This hidden gem waterfront city in BC was named among Canada's best for 'quality of life'

It's not Victoria!

Person by a waterfront. Right: A person at a coffee shop.

Someone in a small city in BC with cute streets.

This charming small B.C. city tends to get overshadowed by the bustling streets of Vancouver and the tourist hot spot of Victoria, but it's got a lot going for it. Within it, you'll find a scenic waterfront with sparkling views, breathtaking natural wonders, quaint streets and charming shops.

It's big enough to feel lively and have thriving local businesses, but small enough not to feel crowded. It's also tucked away on Vancouver Island — giving you access to some of the most incredible nature that the country has to offer.

All that and more is what makes Nanaimo special, and why Narcity's readers named it as having the best quality of life in the country, in a poll.

Just an hour and a half from Victoria and just under two hours on BC Ferries from Vancouver, this small city is close to the action, but maintains a balanced feel to it.

It has its own personality and quirky vibe, with electric shops lining its streets, funky vintage stores, and cool cafes. For anyone who loves to just wander around a city, hunting for unique finds — this is the place to go.

Thrifting gems are easy to find here, and you can take your pick of stores. Go-tos are Bella Vintage, Lucky Cloud, and Rumours Vintage Collective.

After shopping, you can head down to the stunning waterfront, walking along the pathway with views the entire time.

If you want to look beyond the city a bit, you'll find endless nature to explore. Jack Point and Biggs Park is just outside of town and is home unique sandstone formations set along the coast.

Weekend getaways living here could mean camping on Tofino beaches (a three-hour drive away), or visiting cute small towns like Qualicum Beach (30 minutes away).

To top it all off? It's cheaper than the other cities at play. According to Living Wage BC – an organization that calculates "the hourly amount that someone needs to earn to meet their basic expenses" – the living wage in Nanaimo is $23.79. Metro Vancouver's is $27.05, and Victoria's is $26.78 — so the savings can add up.

Life in Nanaimo is looking pretty good!
