Disney Is Opening A New Production Studio In Vancouver & Projects Are Already In The Works

The new studio will work on "special projects" for Disney+ like musical series Moana. 🎬✨

Managing Editor, Canada

Mickey Mouse is coming to British Columbia! Walt Disney Animation Studios just revealed that it's opening a brand new studio in Vancouver next year and there are huge projects lined up already.

The new location — which is set to open in January 2022 — will focus on "long-form series work and special projects created for Disney+."

This will begin with the "highly-anticipated" and "feature-quality" musical series Moana, which is set to debut in 2024.

Amir Nasrabadi, who has worked with Pixar Canada, Paramount Animation and Walt Disney Animation Studios, is set to head the new Vancouver-based studio.

In a statement on Wednesday, Disney Animation president Clark Spencer said that Burbank and Vancouver are home to some of "the world's most talented artists and technicians."

The company says it is recruiting for roles at the new studio "imminently" and is posting opportunities on the Walt Disney Animation Studios' LinkedIn page.

This may be welcome news for Canadian Mickey lovers, as it comes just weeks after the company confirmed it would be permanently closing down all physical Disney Stores across the country.
