NDP leader Jagmeet Singh has a plan to pay for the recovery from COVID-19 in Canada. In a tweet on Thursday, November 5, Singh said Canada’s “super-rich” have made billions of dollars from the ongoing pandemic. It should be their responsibility, he says, to pay for the country’s recovery. He announced that the New Democrats would be calling on the prime minister to take action, to ensure that Canadian “families” won’t be the ones to foot the bill. Jagmeet Singh Going forward, the NDP is calling for a new tax on wealthy Canadians and businesses, who he says have profited from the pandemic. According to CBC News, the proposed tax would affect anybody with wealth that exceeds $20 million. "To pay for the programs, the help that people need ... it should not be families, and people, and workers, and small businesses who have struggled," Singh said on Wednesday. "It should be those who have profited off the pandemic and the ultra-wealthy who contribute their fair share." It’s not the first time Singh has called-out Canada’s most wealthy citizens. In the past he’s taken a dig at both Amazon and Netflix, who he claims are not paying their “fair share” in taxes.
