Ontarians Keep Getting Scammed By Fake Cottage Rentals That Look Totally Legit
People don't even realize they got scammed until they show up at the cottage. 😳
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Huntsville have issued a warning about a new scam targeting hopeful vacationers in the province.
People are falling victim to a cottage rental scam in Ontario, in which they pay for a getaway that they saw in an online ad that appears authentic.
OPP say that the victims don't even realize they've been scammed until they show up to the cottage for their vacation.
The victims attend the cottage for their vacation to find the actual owner of the cottage unaware of the transaction.
Police are stressing how important it is to be extra cautious using websites like Kijiji, as opposed to sites and reputable businesses that specialize in vacation rentals.
They also warn the public not to send money via direct deposit or e-transfer, and to find reviews from past customers to verify legitimacy.
The OPP concluded their warning with a final word of advice:
"If it seems too good to be true, it probably is."
