Erin O'Toole Says He Wouldn't Make COVID-19 Vaccines Mandatory For Federal Employees
The leader of the Conservative Party has confirmed that he is opposed to mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations in Canada for federal employees, stating that "vaccines are not a political issue."
In a statement issued on Sunday, Erin O'Toole said that, if elected, the Conservative Party would implement a regular rapid testing regime rather than a vaccine mandate.
According to CBC News, O'Toole described Trudeau's compulsory vaccine plan as divisive and said Canadians "want a reasonable and balanced approach that protects their right to make personal health decisions."
"What they do not want is the politicization of the pandemic," he said. "Vaccines are not a political issue. To try and make them one is dangerous and irresponsible."
If elected in September, O'Toole says the Conservatives would ensure federal workers and air travellers pass a rapid COVID-19 test before going to work or travelling, rather than making vaccinations mandatory.
He concluded by adding, "We should be united on this, not divided, and Conservatives will not engage in this attempt to drive a wedge between Canadians."
This comes just days after the Liberal government announced that COVID-19 vaccines will become compulsory for federal employees and some travellers. This is set to come into effect no later than October.
