U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has slammed anybody sending racist abuse to England's players after the team's loss in the

Speaking during a press conference on July 12, a day after England played Italy in the tournament final, Johnson described feeling "sad and rueful but also filled with pride and hope."

He went on to praise England FC manager Gareth Southgate and the wider squad for "the best campaign by any England team in any tournament that I can remember."

Johnson also took a moment to speak to "those who have been directing racist abuse at some of the players."

"I say, 'Shame on you,'" he said, "I hope you will crawl back under the rock from which you emerged."

The British PM's comments come as several Black members of the England team have faced racist abuse online following Sunday night's defeat to Italy on penalties.

Earlier on the same day, Prince William took aim at the "totally unacceptable" and "abhorrent behaviour" that took place following the team's loss.

Police in England have confirmed that the online racial abuse "will not be tolerated and it will be investigated."
