A Family Was Kicked Off A WestJet Plane Because Of Masks & The Whole Flight Was Cancelled
A man said it was about his one and a half year old not wearing a mask.
This was intense! The WestJet mask policy led to a family being kicked off a plane because a child didn't have one on and the flight ended up being cancelled. However, there are differing stories on which of the family's two children wasn't wearing a mask.
Safwan Choudhry shared his family's experience on a WestJet flight that was supposed to go from Calgary to Toronto on September 8.
He tweeted a video of what happened and called what his family went through "the most horrific & dehumanizing treatment."
According to Choudhry, his wife was threatened with arrest and removal from the plane unless their daughters, three and one and a half years old, wore masks.
He said that the three-year-old was wearing hers while the younger child was hysterical.
In the video, you can hear children crying while two police officers talk to the family.
Two other passengers called what was happening "bullsh*t."
It's unclear if they were talking about how the family was being treated or the toddler not wearing a face covering.
Choudhry also tweeted that WestJet crew members told him that Transport Canada's policy for masks meant the one and a half year old had to wear one.
His family and all the other passengers on the plane were taken off and the flight was cancelled.
After the decision was made to call off the flight, some passengers said racist and Islamophobic remarks to Choudhry and his family.
However, he said that the majority of people on board the plane were supportive.
"We are dearly touched by all messages from various passengers throughout the day," he tweeted.
He also gave his regards to all the people who had to deal with any sort of hardship and discomfort because of what happened.
While Choudhry said his older daughter was wearing a mask and his younger daughter wasn't, the crew had a different story.
WestJet has a that requires every passenger over the age of two to wear a face covering.
In an email to Narcity, the airline said the crew was requiring the older child to wear one.
"It is important to clarify that WestJet did not request the infant under the age of two to wear a mask," WestJet said.*
Passengers who don't comply with WestJet's mask policy could be with the airline for up to a year.
also has similar penalties for people who don't cover their faces.
