With infections on the rise, the demand for COVID-19 testing is rapidly increasing. Some of Ontario's COVID-19 test centres are reaching capacity before they even open for the day. This gives them no other choice but to turn many people away.

Alison Goehl, a Liberal nominee for the riding of Oakville, told Narcity that she travelled from Oakville to Guelph to try and get a test, as local centres said she wouldn't be able to receive a test before October.

However, she arrived at the Southgate testing centre in Guelph to find that it was at capacity before it even opened its doors.

Southgate is Guelph’s newest testing centre and was established to meet the surge in demand.

According to CBC, the same thing happened at a Kitchener-Waterloo assessment site, which reached capacity before its opening time of 7:30 a.m.

The outlet reports that some patients lined up as early as 5:00 a.m. for a test.

The hospital tweeted just after 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, saying that it had reached capacity and new visitors would be asked to leave.

They didn’t provide a time estimate for when they would be taking new arrivals but did say that it wouldn’t be anytime today.

“I live in Halton and tried making an appointment at Joseph Brant. Was told 4-5 days for someone to contact me and then a 1-3 day wait for an appointment time," patient Sara Murphy told Narcity.

"I thought maybe Oakville might be quicker but no, earliest appointment available is October 4th... 11 days away."

On Tuesday, the province recorded its highest daily increase in new COVID-19 cases since May 2.

Shortly afterwards, Premier Ford revealed the province's 6-pillar plan to fight the impending second wave of the disease.

Ford is adamant that Ontario has been increasing its testing capacity and that the province will have thousands of new testing centres soon.

To increase public access to testing, Ford said they will soon be available in pharmacies across the province

Ontario has reported a total of 47,752 lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 to date.
