President Joe Biden's First Phone Call To A Foreign Leader Will Be With Justin Trudeau

The two leaders will chat this week!
Managing Editor, Canada

It seems Joe Biden and Justin Trudeau are wasting no time in getting down to business!

On the day of the new president’s inauguration, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki confirmed that Biden’s first official phone call with a foreign leader would be with the Canadian prime minister.

While there is typically an in-person visit when a new leader is elected, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and border restrictions mean their first meeting is likely to be virtual.

Before that though, the duo will chat via phone call on Friday, January 22.

While Psaki didn’t reveal what the two leaders are set to discuss, the Keystone XL oil pipeline is likely to be on the agenda.

On the day of Biden’s inauguration, Justin Trudeau shared well-wishes with the new president and described the relationship between the U.S. and Canada as “more than neighbours.”

“I look forward to working with President Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, their administration, and the United States Congress as we strive to make our countries safer, more prosperous, and more resilient,” he added.
