Snow Squalls & Collisions Have Shut Down Highway 400 With More Brutal Weather On The Way

Winter weather is sweeping through the southern parts of the province, and the newest Ontario storm has even shut down Highway 400.

At 3:00 p.m. on Monday, the OPP reported that "dozens" of cars are involved in a collision that's closed the highway in both directions between Highway 88 and Mapleview Drive in Barrie.

Environment Canada has weather advisories in place for most of Southern Ontario, with heavy winds and snow expected this evening.

Parts of the province — like Barrie and Orillia — can expect up to 10 centimetres of snow today with whiteout conditions due to heavy winds.

Other regions — Milton, Burlington, and the GTA — are being advised about poor visibility due to heavy snow and wind.

The conditions have already caused accidents on Highway 400, and the OPP says police and paramedics are on scene to deal with the dozens of cars involved in crashes.

There haven't been any reports of serious injuries, police say.

Police are currently working on clearing the scene, but the OPP is asking drivers to keep aware of changing road and weather conditions and to avoid the parts of Highway 400 in question.
