Toronto Was Lit With Candles This Weekend For The Victims Of The Beirut Explosion (PHOTOS)

Torontonians came together this weekend to pay their respects to the victims of the Beirut explosion. The vigil at Nathan Phillips Square was filled with candles as Canadians remembered the massive blast that has killed over 200 people. Photos that were shared online show the crowds that gathered in Toronto.

Taking place on August 8, hundreds of people could be seen carrying the Lebanese flag, lighting candles, and singing while commemorating the tragedy.

The vigil was held to help honour those who had lost their lives during the explosion.

So far, over $100,000 dollars has been raised through the Humanitarian Coalition crowdfunding platform, which the Lebanese Canadian Coalition (LCC) has partnered with.

The money raised will be going to various NGOs in the area, with a goal of $2.5 million.

The Canadian government has also announced its plans to help out. Canada will actually be matching the donations that were sent in, along with participating in further initiatives to send relief. 

"Canadians generosity in a crisis is remarkable," wrote Karina Gould, Minister of International Development in a tweet. 

"That is why we are announcing the #Lebanon Matching Fund. Every donation made by Canadians to members of Canada’s Humanitarian Coalition between Aug 4 -24, Canada will match."

This will be part of the $5 million donation that Canada has already pledged toward the disaster.

According to the Government of Canada, there have been over 6,000 injuries so far after the explosion. 

According to CP24, Beirut officials have estimated that the damages are anywhere from $10 to $15 billion after Tuesday's explosion. 

The Toronto sign was dimmed earlier this week after John Tory and other officials publicly addressed the incident and extended their condolences. 

John Tory has also said that some big business names in the city have joined in to help out.

Charles Khabouth (owner of REBEL & INK Entertainment), Mohamad Fakih (CEO Paramount Foods) and Rola Dagher (president of Cisco Canada) were among those that helped launch the LCC, according to a tweet from John Tory.
