The U.S. State Department is urging Americans to avoid all travel to Canada right now, due to the country’s “very high” levels of COVID-19.

On April 20, the agency upgraded Canada to Level 4 “do not travel” status on its website, which is the highest alert level possible.

"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 4 Travel Health Notice for Canada due to COVID-19, indicating a very high level of COVID-19 in the country," reads the statement.

In their own notice, the CDC warns that “even fully vaccinated travelers may be at risk for getting and spreading COVID-19 variants and should avoid all travel to Canada.”

It’s a message the CDC has been sharing since the beginning of April, as the number of COVID-19 cases in Canada continues to climb rapidly in some regions.
