A massive student-led protest took place in Calgary on Thursday, October 8.

The Calgary student protest was organized by the Sankofa Arts and Music Foundation, a youth-based non-profit organization.

A letter posted by the foundation on Wednesday, October 7, read that the student walkout protest was happening to "end systematic racism in Calgary schools."

A photo posted by the Black Youth Collective YYC showed students gathered around the Calgary Police Service headquarters during their protest.

The Calgary Herald reported that hundreds of students had taken part in the protest.

The Sankofa letter also mentioned two incidents that took place recently in which a teacher and a principal allegedly said a racial slur in front of students in two different Calgary schools.

Sankofa's letter also said, "Black children do not have the same experience as other children in the education system in this city and province."

The organization is calling for anti-racism training to be given to all staff members within "all school systems at the municipal, provincial, and federal level."
