CFIA

On December 19, a food recall warning was issued for Misteak brand Plant Based Vegan Steaks due to the product containing egg, which is not declared on the label.

The product was sold in B.C., Ontario, Quebec and possibly in other areas of the country.

"Do not consume recalled products to which you are allergic or sensitive as they may cause a serious or life-threatening reaction," says the CFIA.

"When someone comes in contact with a food allergen or added sulphites, the symptoms of an allergic or allergic-type reaction may develop quickly and rapidly progress from mild to severe," says Health Canada. "The most severe form of an allergic reaction is called anaphylaxis. Symptoms can include breathing difficulties, a drop in blood pressure or shock, which may result in loss of consciousness and even death."

Symptoms of anaphylaxis include:

  • Skin: hives, swelling (face, lips, tongue), itching, warmth, redness;
  • Respiratory: coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest pain or tightness, throat tightness, hoarse voice, nasal congestion or hay fever-like symptoms (runny, itchy nose and watery eyes, sneezing), trouble swallowing;
  • Gastrointestinal: nausea, pain or cramps, vomiting, diarrhea;
  • Cardiovascular: paler than normal skin colour/blue skin colour, weak pulse, dizziness or light-headedness, loss of consciousness, shock;

On December 15, a food recall warning was issued for Golden Mushroom brand Enoki Mushroom due to possible listeria contamination.

"Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick," advises the CFIA. "Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Although infected pregnant women may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, the infection can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or even stillbirth. In severe cases of illness, people may die."

"The Government of Canada estimates that there are about 4 million cases of foodborne illness in Canada every year," says the feds, noting that some may not even know they have it. "Many foodborne illnesses can be prevented by following these safe food-handling practices: clean, separate, cook and chill."

If you think you've become sick from consuming a recalled product, the CFIA advises you to contact your healthcare provider. They also suggest checking your home to see if you have the affected items, and if you do, to not "consume, serve, use, sell, or distribute recalled products."

"Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased," they say.

To stay up to date on what Health Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Transport Canada are warning Canadians about, more information on recalls, advisories and safety alerts can be found on the government website.
