A Humane Society Near Toronto Just Got 9 Adorable Kittens That Need Foster Parents ASAP
"We don't want to leave anyone behind."
Nine kittens are coming to the Etobicoke Humane Society (EHS) on Friday, and they are in desperate need of foster homes.
A total of 18 kittens and seven cats were recently found on a rural property outside of Toronto by a local trapper — however, the humane society was only able to take on nine. They are currently in the care of the trapper and will be handed over to the EHS on July 23.
"There was a rural property that was overwhelmed with unfixed cats, and of course, kittens were born, multiple litters," Aris Gyamfi, a senior manager at EHS, told Narcity. "A local trapper from Toronto went up there and was able to connect with the property owner and rescue these kittens and has reached out to us, along with other organizations to find placements for them."
Gyamfi said they have been told the kittens are eight to 10 weeks old and in poor health — none of them have been vaccinated or dewormed.
EHS has committed to take in nine of the kittens despite their foster shortage, but if they manage to secure more foster homes, they may be able to take in more of the cats.
"If we are able to get enough fosters, I would love to provide placement for all of those cats that are remaining. We don't want to leave anyone behind," said Gyamfi.
Who can foster?
Although the kittens may not be social, Gyamfi said you don't need to be an experienced foster to help.
"We're looking for people that have patience and a willingness to learn. So we provide all of the training and support needed to socialize. Kittens, especially of this age, are not challenging typically," she said.
"It's more just about having the basic requirements. Which is a spare room and access to a vehicle and being willing and patient, and wanting to learn and work with us."
EHS is a no-kill shelter, and with their limited capacity due to COVID-19, they are already strapped for space.
"We get contacted about cats and kittens in need on almost a daily basis. So we are really, really facing a foster shortage," she said.
