The Weeknd’s Super Bowl Performance Became A Viral Meme Fest & Here's Why

If there was a trophy awarded for the most meme-able moment of Sunday night, The Weeknd’s Super Bowl performance would have probably won it.

Taking to the stage at halftime, the Canadian star moved between the stands, inside the stadium and on the field.

During one part of the performance, The Weeknd (whose off-stage name is Abel Makkonen Tesfaye) appeared inside a maze of gold-coloured mirrors.

It didn’t take long for the impressive, yet dizzying and disorientating, sequence to capture the attention of the internet and, naturally, so many memes were quicky created.

A combination of confused facial expressions and extreme close-up shots led to all sorts of hilarious comparisons, including this one about getting lost in the grocery store.

Comparisons to Zoom calls and online meetings also received thousands of likes on Twitter.

There were even painfully relatable jokes about that feeling you get when you hear your cat is about to vomit.

Despite the hilarious memes that were born from the extra-AF performance, it seems Canada was pretty proud of the Toronto-born star.

While other Canadians have been involved in past Super Bowl events, The Weeknd became the first Canuck to ever headline a solo halftime show.

The prime minister took to Twitter to praise Tesfaye’s performance, while Toronto Mayor John Tory officially declared February 7 as “The Weeknd Day.”
