A car rally in Oshawa on Wednesday evening drew a crowd of up to 300 people before police were able to shut the event down.

Durham Regional Police told Narcity they received several calls at approximately 8:30 p.m. about "a large gathering of car enthusiasts near Harmony and Taunton."

Upon arrival, Durham Police estimated a crowd of 200 to 300 people was in attendance, none of whom were charged.

"We responded to the area to disperse the crowd. Most vehicles left once they saw our police vehicles [...] Our helicopter (AIR1) was also there to assist us," said Sgt. George Tudos to Narcity.

Durham Region is currently in the red-control zone of the province's COVID-19 framework, which allows for outdoor gatherings of ten people maximum.

Illegal car rallies keep happening in Ontario

In September, massive crowds showed up at a car rally in Wasaga Beach. OPP told Narcity at the time that "there were certainly tensions" between authorities and attendees.

Around 500 people attended an "impromptu car show" in Ancaster just days earlier.

Also that same month, Toronto Police blocked off an entire intersection area after a large group of stunt drivers convened in the Meadowvale and Zoo Road area. Police said that the group became hostile and attacked officers.
