Ontario Liberal Party Leader Steven Del Duca is calling on the LCBO to ban the sales of Russian vodka following the attack on Ukraine.

In a press release on Friday, Del Duca revealed he had written a letter to LCBO President and CEO George Soleas asking for immediate action.

"I am proud to stand in support of an independent Ukraine. I was pleased to see all parties speak forcefully, with one voice, in the Legislature on Thursday to firmly oppose Russia’s blatant violations of international law. The world needs to help in every way that it can," wrote Del Duca.

"It is in that spirit that I write to ask the LCBO, as a provincially owned Crown corporation, to reflect Ontario’s support for an independent Ukraine by halting all commerce with Russia until their troops are withdrawn."

According to a press release, the LCBO holds a number of popular Russian spirits and beverages. Some examples listed include Russian Standard Vodka, Legend of Kremlin Premium Vodka, and Beluga Russian Luxury Vodka.

"Banning the sale of these products will prevent any further money from going to Russia during their illegal invasion," the press release continues.

“I appreciate the financial support Ontario has already offered to Ukraine in their fight against Russia, and I hope the LCBO will consider this measure as another way to restrict Russia’s trade," said Del Duca.

On Thursday, the Ontario government announced that it is ready to assist anyone fleeing from Ukraine.

The Canada-Ukraine Foundation will receive a $300,000 donation from the government that will be used to help provide medical support, emergency shelter and food to those in Ukraine.
